The expansion of vertical cities has taken place at the same time as the proliferation of synthetic images in society. Having appeared with the industrial revolution, they have accompanied all its developments. Serving to represent reality, they emerged simultaneously machines that enable humans to cross spaces faster and faster and as techniques which have facilitated buildings to rise towards the sky. Cities have become ideal places for representing the liberation of mankind and at the same time its alienation. Having been invented in the same period of cinema, modern urban spaces have constituted themselves like films through successive collages, editing processes and uses of light.
Contemporary artists have been setting up city sketch books in cinematographic space and claiming the kind of architecture proper to both films and urban spaces in order to explore modernity, public spaces, and identity; its subject and floating singularity.
Under the double influence of Dostoyevsky and of Peter Sloterdjik, In the Crystal Palace will present hypotheses on cities and images created by artists.
